ya just lean forward and put your head over the handlebars and i let the clutch out just before the blaster starts to move and open the throttle and when the gates drop let off the clutch fast.

getting a good start- before you get on the line, put 2 gooves where your back tires will be going, that way there wont be any loose dirt. then you will need to take several things into consideration: 1. what is the track soil made out of, and how will it grip 2. how will my tires hook up on this type of terrain.
now that you have deiced that you must find a position you want to sit (or stand). if it is more hard packed you may want to lean towards the front of the quad so you dont wheelie. if it is soft you may want to get on the back for more traction.... but there are many factors that will decide where you should put your body on the machine.
next you need to pick which gear you will start out with. if it is sandy/soft compound i like to start in first gear just to make sure it doesnt bog or anything. if it is a harder compound you will probably want to start in second so you have to shift less.
you want to be the first person to see the gate drop or the gun fired. this way you can react quicker and probably get out of the gate at the EXACT moment the start begins. but how is this possible? for a gunfire start: look at the gunman on other races and see what he does before he pulls the trigger. most of the time he will do the same twitch or movement.
for a gate start: dont watch the gate.. watch the pins in the gate. once you see movement... go like hell.

I was one to never hold the throttle wide open...I do tap it and keep pretty high revs...but i dont like when I sit there and just bang the hell outta my motor...Like Flying5 said...dirt and tires are the key....i watch the gate and when it goes down just rip on it....I always give myself 3 inchs of clearance from the gate just to be sure not to get caught. You always get excited...Ive learned it is better to relax and not give 100% focus to just have fun and you will get out of there and ride great! because when you try to hard that is when you fail. I always start in 2nd if not 3rd....and i ride my clutch a lot on the holeshot...I used to start in 1st but it is way to much time to shift and soemtimes you just sit there and spin, you should almost always start in 2nd, depending on your motor.

My front end does NOT stay down, last race I flipped it right over on top of me. 2nd gear start with my nuts on the gas tank and head over the bars. Scary experience to say the least.

haha ask btyamaha about my first race. I got way too much traction and i started in second and pulled huge wheelie off the gate lmao. Now im not half bad and actually got the holeshot a couple times. My motor is bone stock and i start in second....i give it like 78-almost WOT throttle and ease out the clutch. It gets more power to the ground and you always get traction. But thats just me
