if its a harescramble, its probably 1.5 hours, most harescrambles dont run for 2 hours like a gncc. ive been racing the sport class at the gncc's for 3 years as well as two other local series. i have over 100 hours of racing this year alone and here are a few tips i have.
first, go on a few short trail rides and get your suspension set up, XC shocks are way softer than MX shocks.
do your best to get a set of non-mx tires, i run a 20 inch holeshot in the back and a 22 inch holeshot in the front. also if you have cheap .125 or .160 thickness wheels, get some .190's, you'll ruin the thin ones in a heartbeat.
Im sure youve seen the dead engine starts? all motors are off, green flag drops, you start your motor and take off. so practice your launch. Kickstart is kinda nice for this actually b/c when you kick, your already in your motion to move your wieght back.
3 things about the start, first, make sure you can start on the first kick second, you need to practice start to find out where you weight needs to be so you dont wheely or spin. i kick down and plop my but in the middle of the back half of the seat if that makes any sence, lol. third, before the race starts, try to walk the WHOLE track, ride thru it if the rules allow. if anything, walk thru the first half mile. a tip- if your in a less experienced class like beginner or c, on the start, take an outside line around the first turn, there will be a wreck on the very inside almost everytime! make sure your starting position on the line is a good spot considering the line you want to take. if theres someone in your spot, go to the outside of them, if you beat the off the line by a bike length, you can pass them right then and get into your line. now that your racing, remeber your out here for 1.5 hours, so take your time, whatever effort you put into mx, chop about 10-20 percent off that. give all you got in the open sections tho, they dont wear you out a big tip, and this will sound crazy. DONT look at the trees, pay attention to nothing but the trail in front of you. if you see a corner ahead, glace around for an arrow to make sure thats the way you need to go. dont play around with anybody, if there slowing you down pass them. if they are not in your class, rev your engine and yell PASS a time or two and they should get out of your way as soon as they have a chance. if they simply wont move and youve been waiting a while and yelled more than enuff. make SURE they know your back there, i do this with a little xtra throttle and my bumper to thier grab bar. not enuff to damage or wreck anybody, just a love tap. dont yell at anyone in your class, this is a cheap pass. to pass someone in your class evn if there way slower than you, its more sportsman like for you to earn your way around. if its muddy and there is a hill with more than one line. sit at the bottom of the hill and let a few ppeps go up before you, study which lines are being taken and how easy they are. also, if none of the lines are easy, wait until the person in front of you is all the way to the top before you go up. ever had that wierd feeling of what to do when your going up the same trail another quad is flipping down? its not a good one!lol
any other questions? it seems like a lot, but by the second lap it will be first nature

oh yeah, seal up your airbox best you can, its alright i its open on a nice dry day, but if its real dusty or wet/muddy, you really want to keep it as closed up as you can

sweet, sounds like your ready to go! are they 18 or 20 inch holeshots? ive raced a HS with 18's and it wasnt as easy, but you can survive with them. if there 18's i would uggest you try and get some 20's tho.
any other questions, feel free to ask, XC racing is kinda my thing
